A Blast from the Past: The Evolution of Pressure Washers
The history of the petrol water blaster or pressure washer is actually more interesting than it seems. Here at Pressure Solutions Ltd, we offer a selection of high-quality petrol, electric, and diesel water blasters.
If you are interested in learning more about the history of pressure washers and how they came to be, you have come to the right place! In this blog, we will explore the evolution of pressure washers or water blasters over the decades.
Origins
The history of water blasters can be traced back to the days of the Prohibition Era in the 1920s. Frank W. Ofeldt II is credited as the inventor of pressure washing, discovering a way to clean grease off the floor using high pressure steam via a small hose in 1926. This accidental discovery led to the development of the first cleaning device that would combine high pressure wet steam with cleaning chemicals.
Ofeldt’s idea directed him towards Frederic E. Sochuchman Sr. and Mr. Eltinge—together, they developed the first water pressure machine, named High-Pressure Jenny.
Evolution
In the years following, the invention went through several modifications, most notably Alfred Karcher’s contribution in 1950 with the Karcher Salt-Bath Furnace—the first hot water high pressure cleaner. A decade later, uniflow design piston pumps were established by the ‘Cat Pump’ company. These pumps were better than previous models, with an extended lifespan and were able to reach pressures up to 1000 pounds per square inch (PSI).
Today
Nowadays, water blasters are still being used in both commercial and residential applications, with some models capable of reaching up to 4000 PSI. There are also now many different water blasters available on the market. From cleaning driveways to industrial floors, water blasters are still in demand.
